She started her career as a human rights advocate in Kolkata, initially through a law firm, following the advice from Late Barrister Moniruddin Ahmed in 2006. Later in 2009, she joined the field as a full-time lawyer, where she built her expertise in victim-centric human rights advocacy in Kolkata. She further practised litigation and worked under Advocate Om Prakash Dubey; subsequently, she practised together with her husband, Advocate Barun Kumar Ray. Mita was a talent in debates and extempore since her school years, when she won awards participating in such competitions. With time, this interest grew into a massive career in law as a successful representation in international forums at the UN, G-20 Summit, and as Vice Chairperson (India) of the International Women Parliament.
